Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Instructor

CIT trainings are evidence-based blocks of instruction that have demonstrated safe outcomes for people in crisis who interact with criminal justice professionals and first responders. Below is an overview of my involvement with CIT trainings since 2010:

From 2010 to 2014 I was part of a team that participated in local law enforcement’s annual 40-hour CIT training in Everett, WA.

In 2015, I was invited by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) to join other professionals in developing curriculum for an 8-hour CIT training. That workgroup met over the span of 2 years and then launced its first trainings in 2017. I had the privilege of being an instructor for those initial classes in Burien, WA.

Since 2015, I have been a CIT Instructor for the National Institutue of Corrections (NIC). These trainings have taken me all over the country, teaming up with a cadre of other professionals, each of us presenting our areas of expertise during the course of the 40-hours. I am honored to have taken part in NIC teams that were invited to the following criminal justice agencies: Washington Corrections Center for Women, Gig Harbor, WA; Multnomah County Corrections, Portland, OR; Office Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Salt Lake City, UT; James River Correctional Facility, Jamestown, ND; Collins County Sheriff’s Office, McKinney, TX; Texas Mental Health Training Initiative for Jails, Correctional Management Institute of Texas at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX; Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, N. Charleston, SC; Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Madison, WI; Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Ft Lauderdale, FL; Douglas County Corrections, Omaha, NE; and Fayette County Detention Center, Lexington, KY.

In 2025, I circled back to the WSCJTC and have stepped in as a CIT instructor as needed for its Law Enforcement classes.

In 2026, I was invited to the Northwest Regional CIT Conference to present a breakout session titled “Suicide Intervention: From Risk to Resilience”. Spokane, WA

My curriculum development for CIT trainings include: Mental Health Disorders & Medication, Autism Spectrum Disorder & Intellectual Disabilities, Suicide Prevention & Intervention, Active Listening, Youth & Elderly Considerations, Officer Wellness & Resilience.
